Doi Lang ,  Pha Hom Pok National Park

       The located in Tambon (Sub-district) Pong Nam Ron, Fang District, Chiang Mai. In 2000 the park was declared the 97th National Park of Thailand with the name “Mae Fang National Park” and on March 14th, 2006 , the name was changed to “ Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park” It is covers a total area of 524 square kilometers. On its west side it stretches along the Myanmar border over a distance of 70 km. The summit of this “Doi (mountain) is 2,285 meters above sea level, making it the second highest mountain in Thailand.

       the top of the mountain is a plain area which causes by geological condition; there have thin layer of soil and stratum of granite lays underground, and heavy blowing wind all the year round. From that place, traveler can see wonderful sceneries such as Fog Sea and the road on the ridges of mountains along with Thai-Burmese border.

Doi Lang is actually part of Doi Pha Hom Pok, the located on the north east side of the park in Mae Ai and Tha Ton District. – near Chiang Rai province, its geographical coordinates are 20? 6' 0" North, 99? 16' 0" East. In the north of Thailand, here is a highest spot to birding or may can say is a haven for birder and bird photographer because almost specie bird in north of Thailand you can found here all, migrant bird passage bird and resident bird, this is a top of the bird list wanted to see here Cutia, Scarlet Finch, Red-tailed Laughingthrush, Rusty-naped Pitta, Spotted Red-faced-LiocichlaWren Babbler, Golden Bush Robin,Green Cochoa, Jerdon’s Bushchat, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Mountain Bamboo Partridge. Another bird to present such as Black-breasted Thrush, Grey-sided Thrush, Eyebrowed Thrush, Spot-winged Grosbeak, Black-eared Shrike-Babbler, Spot-breasted Laughingthrush, Red-faced Liocichla, Orange-flanked Bush-Robin, White-tailed Flycatcher, Black-throated Tit, Whiskered Yuhina, Slender-billed Vulture.

How to get here Doi Lang


By Air Plan :
flight from Bangkok airport to Chiang Rai Airport fly around 1.30 hr. and then guide pick you up airport and drive to Tha Ton far from Chiang Rai 1 hr.

By Car : Drive from Chiang Rai to Doi Lang 1 hr. and Chiang Mai to Doi Lang 2.30 hr.

Summary itinerary
Start in early morning from resort at Tha Ton and then drive to summit far from here
1.30 hr., the good road reach to Doi Lang Protection Unit office 1 on the junction
also have army base camp on the corner, where you turn right. (foot hill to here 12
km.) From here on you will travel a further 10-11 km. till there is an obvious
valley with paddy fields and bamboo cottages call Na Ma Ean the highest rice farm in
Thailand, 2,000 meter above sea level, here it’s the home of Jerdon’s Bushchat the
rare bird in Thailand and many specie bird such as Indian Roller, Burmese Shrike,
Pied Bushcaht, Grey Bushcaht, White Wagtail, Common Rosefinch, Gould’s Sunbird,
Eurasian Kestral .

From this point on you drive up and up around 10 km. to Border Police Point (BPP.)
at the top called Than Pahompok 2,020 MSL. Bird around here such as Black-throated Laughingthrush, Black-headed Sibia, Cutia, Redfaced Liocichla, Minivet, Siberian Blue Robin, Rufous-gorgetted Flycatcher, Large Niltava, Yellow-bellied Fantail and more 50 specie.

From there the road carries on for another 7 km until another BPP by the name of
Than Chao Payah. This stretch is between 2,000-2,100m above sea level. Here road is broken down to valley can’t drive to crossing. The forested road is healthy and
views spectacular. Around here birder had to seen Fire-tailed Sunbird,
Slender-billed Vulture.

Where’s to Birding and Take a Bird Photo.
The usually birding and bird photographyalong the road, in every year bird feeding or living in not a same place last year, must to use a guide for a good spot to watching them.

Weather Condition
The temperature in this area is approximately 20 degrees Celsius all the year round; it is about -3 degrees Celsius in night on third week December and second week on January  in a day time 3 degrees Celsius.March to April, the highest temperature is 30 degree Celsius on April and heavy rain on May to September approximately 1,184 mm. of rain all the year round.

What the best time
Dec. – Jan.  :  Peak season for birding resident and migrant bird
Feb. – Mar. :   No good time season because smoke from burn farm coverage
Apr. – Oct.  :  resident bird and raining
